Willowsford, Virginia is an inventive and original community located in Loudoun County. Willowsford is technically located in the city of Ashburn, adjacent to Aldie. What makes Willowsford special is that it is a unique concept - an “agri-community” built around sustainable farming that benefits the community. The community sits on 4,000 bucolic acres divided into four villages, each with its own farm. The way that the land is divided up encourages residents to get their hands dirty, so to speak literally, and to be part of the sustainable community development. A 350-acre farm anchors Willowsford itself, with goats, chickens, and crops raised on site that are sold in the local farmer’s market each Wednesday. Residents can purchase fresh produce that’s been harvested or go out into the fields and select it themselves.
According to Willowsford’s community website, Willowsford “draws on Virginia's scenic landscape and rich agricultural heritage to create a community defined by its expansive natural beauty, unique and engaging recreational spaces, a strong food and farm connection, and activities that encourage an appreciation for the environment and land stewardship.” Certainly the land it sits on is gorgeous. Settled in the foothills of the Piedmont, the rolling countryside provides a picturesque background for gorgeous homes built by eight different builders - homes that speak of affluence and grandeur, with plots ranging from just under ¼ of an acre to 1.5 acres, some of which have prices ranging into the seven figures.
Half of Willowsford’s 4,000 are in conservancy, being held for wildlife preservation and recreational farming by the nonprofit Willowsford Conservancy. Because of its nonprofit status, the Conservancy can apply for farm grants and garner the money to hold community events like the Rev3 races, which take place on the miles of hiking and biking trails that run throughout the community. There are two resident centers with swimming pools, and an amphitheater that serves as the centerpiece of community events.
Willowsford is situated serendipitously along historic Route 50. It’s a great place for commuters to live, with easy access to transportation and major employment centers in Northern Virginia: Washington Dulles International Airport, Reston Town Center, Route 28, the Dulles Toll Road and I-66 are all able to be reached within approximately 15 minutes. As for getting around, the Metrorail extension to the Dulles airport and beyond that to Route 772 is right now under construction with completion estimated to take place in 2017.
