GIS app for road conditions in Prince William CountyHave you ever been driving on a Northern Virginia road and felt the unmistakable rut of a pothole, or faced an unplowed road after a fresh snowstorm? Wouldn’t it be helpful to know exactly who to contact to get these issues resolved in a timely manner? Well, thanks to a dedicated app, now drivers in one NoVa county have a way of contacting exactly who they need in case of road emergencies.

There’s a great, updated app that gives drivers in Prince William County the information they need on plowing, road closures, construction, and more. The Prince William County Geographic Information Systems (GIS) is your go-to for everything and anything you need to know about driving around this Northern Virginia county.

According to the Manassas Patch, the GIS has up-to-date, real time information on road closures. Malcolm Echaluce, GIS Administrator, said that the app lets drivers know who is responsible for maintaining certain areas of particular roads. "It shows, for example, if the road is maintained by the Virginia Department of Transportation, or the county or the towns, or if it's privately owned or maintained."

To make things even simpler, roads on the GIS map are color-coded to let drivers quickly know who is in charge of the road on which they are driving - or any road, for that matter. The app shows pertinent phone numbers for plowing, pothole repair, or other facets of road maintenance. This way, drivers can quickly connect with exactly who they need to talk to concerning a particular thoroughfare.

"If there are particular roads that people happen to be driving on and perhaps there's a pothole issue or another service related issue, they would know exactly who to contact or who the responsible party is. That way they're not left to figure out who's supposed to be taking care of it," Echaluce told the Patch, explaining the functionality of the GIS.

Wanting to get a peek at any prospective problem spots before you leave the house? You can check out the GIS website from your computer to get a real-time look at the county map for incidences of road closures or other major traffic issues. The map also shows road maintenance projects throughout the county, allowing you to plan your trip accordingly for the fastest-possible ride. You can also subscribe to receive text alerts of new road closures in your area, so you will never be surprised by detours and snarls of unexpected traffic on your commute ever again.
