If you are a fan of shopping at Target - and really, who isn’t? - then you will be excited to hear about the planned opening of a pocket-sized “Bullseye” retail store in Ballston, a suburb of Arlington. Target is the perfect store for picking up that one thing that you absolutely need… and walking out with a cartful of other stuff that you didn’t realize you had to have. IN approximately four years, residents of Ballston will be living the dream.

The Target will be part of the under-construction, 12-story mixed use development being erected by Saul Centers, Inc. at the intersection of Wilson Boulevard and N. Glebe Road. Conveniently located three blocks from the Ballston Metro station, the development is on the site of a former Mazda dealership. It’s going to take until 2021 for it to be finished, but Target will eventually be situated at the ground floor of the building.

According to Target’s website, the store will be approximately 41,500 square feet, a smaller size than their regular big-box retail stores located across the country. This smaller format is one that Target is pushing aggressively right now in urban retail centers, dense suburbs, and college areas, tailored towards grab-and-go shoppers who might take public transportation to get there. The inventory is scaled accordingly. As per the website, the Ballston Target will offer “a selection of fresh and grab-and-go grocery items, men’s and women’s apparel and accessories, electronic and entertainment items, beauty, health and personal care products, a curated assortment of home décor, a selection of toys and sporting goods, baby care items and more." There will also be a CVS Pharmacy inside the store.

Mark Schindele, senior vice president of properties at Target, was quoted as saying that the Ballston Target will be a “convenient one-stop shop” for surrounding areas. “Local guests as well as visitors to the community will enjoy an easy and inspiring experience, featuring a grocery assortment, exclusive apparel brands, a location to pick up online orders and the convenience of 40 dedicated parking spaces,” he said.

The store opening will be an exciting development for the area, says Del. Patrick Hope (D): “I’m delighted to welcome Target’s expansion into the Ballston area of Arlington. Target has broken the mold with its retail stores specifically tailored to the uniqueness of the neighborhood. The addition of more grocery options and a quick pick-up services is the right fit for the Ballston neighborhood and I can’t wait for their grand opening.”

Target currently operates a small-format store in nearby Rosslyn.
