Beautiful, historic Leesburg is the county seat of Loudoun County. It is a vibrant, growing town that it so much more than a bedroom community for the Greater Washington metro area. With just under 50,000 residents, Leesburg balances the heart of a small town with the conveniences and amenities of a bigger city. Leesburg has seen tremendous growth in the last 30 years. Formerly a small, rural community, it, along with neighboring Ashburn and Landsdowne, has seen phenomenal development in the years preceding and following the turn of the millennium.
The name “Leesburg” comes from Thomas Lee, a colonial landowner who managed tobacco plantations in Arlington, Fairfax, Fauquier, Prince William, and Loudoun Counties. He was a predecessor of Francis Lightfoot Lee and Robert E. Lee. Leesburg appears again in history as a haven for Dolly Madison when she fled Washington during the War of 1812, taking important documents and state portraits with her so they couldn’t be destroyed by the British. History buffs with enjoy visiting sites like Dodona Manor, the once-home of Gen. George C. Marshall, Ball’s Bluff Battlefield, a Civil War battle site, and Oatlands Plantation, one of just 18 national properties on the National Trust for Historic Preservation.
Leesburg today has a thriving sense of community which embraces residents and their families. The first Friday of every month except for January is set aside for live music, art exhibits, wine tasting, and lots of other fun activities. Downtown is a general hub of activity, bustling with retail, restaurants, and businesses, all set amidst the pretty historic setting. There are numerous parks and public spaces to enjoy, including Ida Lee Park, containing a picnic pavilion and playground, Red Rocks Wilderness Overlook Regional Park, which has exceptional hiking trails, and The Rust Manor House and Nature Sanctuary, which consists of a mansion and nature preserve operated by the Audubon Naturalist Society. Annual events include the Classic Car Show and Leesburg Flower and Garden Festival, as well as the patriotic Independence Day Parade. There is a weekly Farmer’s Market.
