Oakton, Virginia

Oakton, Virginia, is a small census-designated place (CDP) in Fairfax County. This community, known for its affluence, is one of the most appealing small towns in the Greater D.C. Metro Area. As of the 2010 Census, it was home to just over 34,000 residents. With a center fifteen miles southwest of the Capital, it is a great place to live for those who work in Washington, D.C. The landmass of Oakton is just under 10 square miles.

Almost 60 percent of households in Oakton consist of married couples, and over a third contain children. In this respect, Oakton is very much a family community. Fairfax County Schools runs the schools in Oakton, which include Oakton Elementary School and Waples Mill Elementary School. The closest middle and high schools are in neighboring Vienna. Oakton is also home to the private Flint Hill School.

One notable historic site in Oakton is the Oakton Schoolhouse. It was the third schoolhouse to be erected in the vicinity, back in 1854 when the area was known as Flint Hill. It burned down during the Civil War. A replacement school was constructed around 1873 “at the intersection of Hunter’s Mill Road with the road leading from Fairfax court House to Vienna” on Gibson Whaley’s land. That schoolhouse was turned into a residence, and a third schoolhouse was built just before the turn of the nineteenth century by James Thompson. That schoolhouse still stands today, having been converted into apartments, then retail space.

Homes in Oakton are more expensive than the average for Northern Virginia, and reflect the town’s well-heeled residents. The average home price for all detached homes and condos was $615,676 in 2013. The median home price for all housing types was $569,695. The mean home price for a detached home is $804,164, with most townhomes or condos floating in the $400k - $500k range. Oakton is full of million-dollar abodes offering palatial floor plans and every amenity you could ask for. There are more reasonable home prices to be found if you look hard enough, however. 

The median household income in Oakton is $167,512, and the median family income is $188,308. Most workers in Oakton are employed in the sector of “professional, scientific, and technical services” (27 percent), followed by “public administration” (18 percent), and “construction” (7 percent) with miscellaneous other trades accounting for the rest.
