Oakton, Virginia, is a small census-designated place (CDP) in Fairfax County. This community, known for its affluence, is one of the most appealing small towns in the Greater D.C. Metro Area. One notable historic site in Oakton is the Oakton Schoolhouse. It was the third schoolhouse to be erected in the vicinity, back in 1854 when the area was known as Flint Hill. It burned down during the Civil War. A replacement school was constructed around 1873 “at the intersection of Hunter’s Mill Road with the road leading from Fairfax court House to Vienna” on Gibson Whaley’s land. That schoolhouse was turned into a residence, and a third schoolhouse was built just before the turn of the nineteenth century by James Thompson. That schoolhouse still stands today, having been converted into apartments, then retail space.
