Beautiful Vienna, Virginia, is an incredible place to live. You need not take our word for it: CNN Money named it as the third-best neighborhood in the country. This small town in Fairfax County is popular with those who commute to work in Washington, D.C. With a population under 16,000, it definitely delivers on that “small town” feeling that is so beloved. Vienna borders Dunn Loring, Fairfax, Falls Church, McLean, and Reston. Vienna has much to boast about: highly-ranked public schools, a downtown thriving with small businesses, and close access to activities and entertainment.
Vienna VA was Ranked # 3 of "Best Places to Live" by CNN Money
Vienna was first settled in the 1740s. At first, it was known as Ayr Hill. Colonel Charles Broadwater bought the land and his son-in-law, John Hunter, built upon it and named it after his hometown of Ayr, Scotland. Ayr Hill was just a tiny community until just before the Civil War, when a doctor named William Hendrick settled there and rechristened it for his hometown of Vienna, New York (which has since been renamed as Phelps). During the War, Vienna became mildly famous for an armed clash during which Confederate troops routed out a Union occupation.
Life in Vienna is active and fun. As a community, Vienna is tightly-knit, holding annual celebrations like Viva Vienna, a Halloween parade, and fireworks on the 4th of July. The town has easy access to the W&OD Bike Trail, which extends eastward to Washington and west to Loudoun County and is a treasure for hikers and bikers alike. The Tysons Corner shopping center is nearby, as well as the natural and cultural resources of the Wolf Trap National Park for the Performing Arts.
The schools of Vienna, as already mentioned, are fantastic. This makes Vienna very attractive to families with children. There are two high schools, two middle schools, and six elementary schools. The marching band at James Madison High School is known as the “Pride of Vienna,” and all the middle and high schools offer a wide range of extracurricular activities as well as accelerated programs for gifted and talented students.
Commuters in Vienna are fortunate: the Metro’s Orange and Silver lines are easily accessible, making transportation to D.C. and Loudoun County as easy as can be. It is also surrounded by fantastic highway access: RT 66, RT 267, RT 7, and RT 50 are all within a few minutes’ drive. Within Vienna, top employers include Navy Federal Credit Union, Fairfax County Public Schools, the Town of Vienna, and a number of other employers with between 100 and 249 workers.
